The biggest decision he has to make in the book happens after he finds out the beggining of the universe. To explain what happens so whoever reads this is not confused, Kernal's power is that he can see lights that no one else can see. This sounds pointless at first, but he eventually finds out he can link the lights together to make portals to different universe(s). These universes belong to demons who want to kill every form of life in our universe. So he basicly battles them all along with other people with powers. The Original beings (who were the first alien race to exist in our universe) want to show him how the universe started.
Unfortunately, I can't describe how the universe was made because it would take over a 1,000 words. So after he finds out, he realizes along with the Original beings that the demons will destroy everything in their path, so they propose that because of his power he could select 2 of every alien race and put them on a planet. Each of the aliens he chose would have to have powers to attack the demons in case they did come without them noticing. But the plan was whenever the demons would come, he could build a portal for the planet and go safely to the other side of space to avoid them. So he basicly would be like Noah from the bible. This plan was considered the only way to insure life could live.
Kernal decides even though the earth is supposedely screwed, he will try to fight with his allies and try to kill all the demons. So even if they do fail he could just build a portal and go back to his "ark". Unfortunately, they do fail, and in a vision he saw, one of their allies ended up betraying them. So after he goes back to his hideout he tells his friends he wants to go back. But the leader of the group says no, and claws out his eyes, stopping him from building a portal. So Kernal realizes that mankind is doomed, and the lifeforms he was supposed to protect will die.
If I were Kernal, I would have done the exact same thing. Even if the earth was screwed, I'd still try to fight and save it. I think his plan was smart and stupid. It was a bad one, because he knew from the start that the demons would conquer earth. I think he still tried to save it because it's almost impossible to except the fact that your home planet, and everyone you know is going to die, and you can't do a thing about it. Another reason he might have tried is because there is always a slim chance against the odds, so at least he tried. That's why I think it was kind of smart. I think it was stupid of him to do this because now all the other alien races are going to die. Instead of telling everyone he was going to his "ark", I would have just left. But either way, his plan failed him and the ending of the book was sad.
